If you choose to fly your American flag 24-7 then according to the rules of flag etiquette it must be illuminated between dusk and dawn. The most efficient way to handle the lighting is to install a solar light.

You can have a solar light on top of the flag pole or you can mount one on the shaft of the flag pole. Most often solar lights are placed in the ground with the light beams aimed at the flag.

Solar lighting is very reliable and in addition to flag illumination, they can also be used as security lights and even at times for a spot light. Incandescent light can be used in these situations but not as effective and at a much higher cost than solar lighting which will last just as long or longer than electric lighting.
