Facts and History of Sami Flag

Children of the Sun: Exciting facts and History of Sami Flag

Being unknown by many persons, Sami is the representative word for the indigenous nations in the Nordic countries and additionally the Kola Peninsula.

Facts and History of Sami Flag point out the existence of two flags representing this nation: the first unofficial flag pictured a tricolour with a Nordic cross attached to it.

However, a design change was proposed and a flag design contest took place for finding a flag that represents the Children of the Sun completely.

A female Sámi artist has been chosen as winner due to the complex design of the new flag: she added to the red-yellow-blue tricolour a green colour stripe that is popular on South Sámi gáktis and a red and blue moon motif in the centre that is particular for the shaman's drums.

Nowadays, the flag is flown in Norway every year on February 6 (the Sámi National Day).
