Relive American History – Find Civil war flags for Sale
During the American Civil War, armies from both sides of the war had their own flags.
This had a practical implication as well, helping armies to locate their own troops in the battle field. The flags were used to lead the charge or lead the retreat.
The flag gave a sense of pride to each regiment and they took great care to protect their flag and flag bearer during battle. Replicas of those early flags are still available today. There are a variety of sources which have the Civil war flags for sale.
The Confederate regiments generally carried a flag representing their army. For instance, the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia had the St. Andrews cross on a wool or heavy cotton fabric. The state and number initials of the regiment were often mentioned in the flags.
Some regiments had the battle names they participated in, written on their flag as an honor to their efforts. The more the number of battle honors on the flag, the more prestigious the flag was for the regiment. Different confederate armies had different designs for their flags.
The Union regiments in the army of the Potomac had a regimental flag and a national flag. Here again, the different regiments had their own, unique designs. Sometimes, smaller flags or guidons were used to indicate the end of the regiment. When the flags wore out or got damaged, they would be retired for safe keeping by the State.
Some of these worn out flags with battle scars are still available today. A search for Civil war flags for sale in any search engine would list a number of vendors selling these flags. While the original flags used in battle would be extremely expensive, the replicas can generally be purchased for cheaper prices.
