The flag of Madagascar is made of a white vertical stripe and then two horizontal stripes, red over green.
These colors were used by the last Merina monarch. The flag of Indonesia uses the same colors.
The flag was adopted on 14 October 1958 but independence from France didn’t happen until June 26, 1960 and a constitution in 1975. However the flag was not changed.
Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. The older name of this country was the Malagasy Republic.
Some citizens believe that if their elected president is pushed out by a military coup that is no longer a democracy. One citizen stated “patriotism is a notion that is permanently present or not present at all.”
In the 1790’s Merina rulers established a hegemony over most of Madagascar. A hegemony is domination of one social group or nation over others.
