The Florida State Flag was adopted in 1899. The flag has a red cross on a white background with the cross reaching into each corner f the flag, with a seal in the middle of the cross that represents the lakes, rivers, palm tress, flowers and sunshine.
The flag was designed with the Confederate Battle flag in mind. The cross bars must be six inches wide.
The colors represent purity and courage and the cross represents the Confederate Battle flag. The Indian women in the seal represent the Seminoles, which were the first habitants. "In God We Trust" is displayed around the seals edge.
The flag can sometimes be confused with the Alabama State Flag, which has the same design and color, but the Florida flag has the seal in the middle to distinguish from the Alabama flag, which is just a cross and no seal or wording.
