History of Brazil Flag

Facts and History of Brazilian Flag

Would you like to know some interesting facts about the history of Brazil’s flag and how it came into it’s current manifestation?

The modern flag of Brazil was adopted on 19 November 1889. It had a green field with a large yellow rhombus on it. There is a blue circle bisected by a white band which has the words "Ordem e Progresso" on it which translates to "Order and Progress".

The blue circle on the first flag had 21 stars on it, one for each Brazilian state and one for the Federal District. It is said that these stars represented the night sky on the day that independence was declared.

Unlike the U.S.A. every Brazilian state is represented by a specific star on the official national flag of Brazil. At this time there are 27 stars on this flag meaning Brazil now has 26 states.

The meaning of the colors and symbols are for another discussion although this is too important and interesting to pass up. The yellow is suggestive of the mineral riches of Brazil.

Between 1500 and 1900 Brazil yielded more gold than all the rest of the world put together. Blue of course is the sky and green the riches of the Amazon rain forest.

Brazil has a rich Portuguese culture and language. It has a cosmopolitan lifestyle.
