A national symbol of courage: Facts and History of Réunion Flag
Being a French administrative region, Réunion didn’t have for many years a particular national flag even though there have been proposed many versions of a national flag with French style influences.
Facts and history of Réunion Flag show that 2003 was the year that brought a solution to this region: the adopted flag pictures the characteristic volcano of Fournaise formed out of four colours with a white circle in the middle.
The colors have been associated with a particular national symbol: green pictures the marronage, red stands for the time period the citizens have been enslaved while orange symbolizes the working class.
The French colours on the left side stand as sign for Réunion’s loyalty to the French administration.
