The forty-eighth state admitted to the United States was Arizona in 1912.
The Arizona State Flag was adopted in 1917. The flag has red, gold and blue colors with a copper in the middle of the flag star below the apparent red and gold stripes.
The red and gold stripes represent the sun over the desert that was symbolic of the first Spanish settlers. The dark blue color of the flag represents the loyalty to the United States or liberty as some say.
The thirteen gold and red sunrays represent the first thirteen countries of Arizona although there are fifteen today. The copper star represents the state as mining more copper than any other state.
Charles W. Harris a Colonel in the National Guard designed the flag in 1910. The flag was voted one of the ten best flags in the country and ranked 6th out of 72 American flags.
